Chapter 19

It was a few hours later when he heard the crunch of approaching footsteps on snow. “Did you finally get some sleep?”

“I don’t need to anymore.”

Julian glanced over his shoulder. Kurli. “Oh, sorry. Thought you were Ryne. Had a hell of a time convincing her to get to bed.”

“Yeah. That girl should teach stubborn to stones.” Kurli, like Luxathia, was just wearing her normal clothing. At this point, Julian was shocked that parts of her skin weren’t freezing from the temperatures. “How’s everything going?”

“I’m afraid to say, because I don’t want to jinx it,” Julian said, hovering the hologram of the next compiler until it was in the right place. “But I hope that answers the question.”

Kurli nodded. “I know that feeling. It’s been… a decent stretch of time with no turrets firing. Starting to feel like the calm before the storm.”

“That’s because it is,” Julian said. “Symmetry is still out there. At some point, he’s going to resurface. I’m shocked he hasn’t.” Julian took his eyes off her to place the Grasper, carefully aligning it with the belt and compiler. “Hey, this question might seem random, but have you made any permanent undead lately?”

Kurli shook her head. “Permanent undead drain my Humanity score faster than anything. I was planning on saving it up until the next fight, to use it where it has the most impact. Why do you ask?”

“Because Luxathia did.” Julian shook his head. “I’ll explain later. But… you’re still doing necromancer lessons with her?”

“Yeah?”

“Anything seemed off?”

Kurli rocked her hand in a see-saw motion. “She’s been a bit agitated since her ship got back. Nothing major, but… she’s forgotten to feign life. I’ve been watching her as much as I can, between my other duties.”

“I wasn’t.” Julian sighed. “Probably should have. But that’s water under the bridge. Have to deal with it moving forward.”

Kurli’s forehead furrowed. “You’re not telling me something.”

“I will. Back in the Command center. Once we finish the new production I want to do a full Council meeting. It’s been too long since we last had one.”

“Agreed.” Kurli settled down onto the balls of her feet, sitting on her own heels. It was a pose that always caught Julian a bit off guard. Aelif spines were more flexible than humans, and their legs could hold that pose for far longer. When there wasn’t somewhere good to sit, they’d just… sometimes settle in like that. Kurli put her elbows on her knees and rested her head in her hands, looking perfectly comfortable. “Did you convince Ryne that she’s out of her mind with this plan?”

Julian didn’t need to ask which plan Kurli meant. “I didn’t. To be honest, I don’t know if she is.”

Kurli’s eyes flashed to life, a bit of the old anger born of protective instincts flaring up, but she tamped it down. “Explain it to me.”

“Her reasoning isn’t bad, Kurli. If anything, it’s good. Understanding magic better would prevent more disasters in the future, and we did cause this one. On top of that.
